Le soldat de Marathon, sculpture en bronze homme avec branche de laurier

Jean Pierre Cortot, France 1787-1843. This model has been executed in marble for the Salon in 1834 which is now in the Louvre Museum in Paris. The sculpture depicts the Greek soldier Pheidippides who ran the 26 miles from Marathon to Athens to announce  a Greek battle victory. This event has since given its name to the famous marathon race. The length of which is equal to the distance from Marathon to Athens.  This sculpture has been cast around 1880 by the Barbedienne Foundry.
