Antique bronze sculpture Britannia Thames tunnel Sir Marc Brunel

Antique bronze sculpture Britannia as river goddess to commemorate the knighthood of Sir Marc Brunel in 1841. Marc Brunel was a French-émigré engineer and inventor who solved the historic problem of underwater tunneling. This sculpture is picturing Britannia with trident, the Thames Tunnel, a globe, instruments and a paddle wheel. The hexagonal form at the base is almost certainly a simplified representation of the tunnel-boring apparatus invented by Sir Marc Brunel to dig under the Thames
