Pair of Art Deco bronze bookends picturing Lamassu, a human headed winged lion, signed by C. Charles. Egyptian revival, France 1930. The Lamassu is a mythical creature present in ancient Assyrian architecture. These towering creatures were over four meters tall and depicted a beast with the body of a bull or lion, the head of a man, and the wings of an eagle.
