This sculpture was conceived in 1888, it is a sculpture in the tradition of  using an allegorical representation of ideas and feelings.

Cyprien Quentin Godebski or Cyprien (de la Frenaye) Godebski was the son of the Polish writer Franciszek Ksawery Godebski(1801-1869) and Ludwika Dezyderia Rymińska, and the grandson of the poet Cyprian Godebski (1765-1809 ).
He studied with François Jouffroy.
He first exhibited in Paris at the Salon of 1857. Until 1896 his work was regularly exhibited at the Salon. Godebski briefly taught at the Saint Petersburg Art Academy. His oeuvre is spread all over the world. He sculpted famous characters in France, England, Russia, Poland, Belgium, Hungary, Ukraine, Monaco and Peru.
He was friends with Stéphane Mallarmé, Franz Liszt, Gioacchino Rossini, Gabriël Fauré, Alphonse Daudet and the Goncourt brothers.
