Art Deco Silvered Bronze Polar Bear Bookends by M. Paignant – Maison Colin, France 1925
This exceptional pair of Art Deco polar bear bookends by M. Paignant perfectly embodies the elegance and sophistication of French decorative arts during the 1920s.
Animal subjects played a central role in Art Deco design, and the polar bear became one of the era’s most iconic motifs. These striking sculptures combine stylised geometry with naturalistic detail, creating an impressive balance between strength and refinement.
Cast in silvered bronze and mounted on elegant Belgian Black marble bases, the bookends display remarkable craftsmanship and decorative appeal. The contrast between the luminous silver finish and the deep black marble enhances their sculptural presence.
Both pieces bear the signature M. Paignant together with the foundry seal of Maison Colin, one of the leading French art foundries of the Art Deco period. Following its acquisition by Louis Paignant in 1923, the foundry became known for producing high-quality decorative bronzes often marked Ancienne Maison Colin.
Today, original Art Deco animal bookends are highly prized by collectors of French decorative arts, luxury interiors and period sculpture.
A rare and elegant collector’s set of museum-quality decorative appeal.
