An exceptional and highly collectible handwoven tapestry entitled Mermaids, designed by renowned Belgian artist Julien van Vlasselaer (1907–1995) and produced by the celebrated De Wit Royal Manufacturers of Tapestry, Mechelen.
Created in 1957, this remarkable textile artwork presents an abstract interpretation of mermaids through a sophisticated Mid-Century Modern aesthetic. Fluid forms, balanced composition and subtle tonal variations create a powerful decorative presence while reflecting the innovative spirit of post-war Belgian design.
Handwoven in a luxurious blend of wool and silk, the tapestry demonstrates outstanding craftsmanship, texture and visual depth. It bears the artist’s signature Van Vlasselaer together with the mark of Weavery De Wit Mechelen, one of Europe’s most prestigious tapestry workshops.
