Art Deco

Clean. Powerful. And unmistakably present. That is Art Deco.

Art Deco is not subtle. A bronze sculpture, a sculptural lamp, a pair of bookends – every piece claims its place in a room at once. At Deconamic you won’t find a collection of this and that, but a selection of objects that deliver on that feeling. Each piece is chosen for its form, quality, craftsmanship and the way it adds something to an interior. Something that newly made décor can rarely give.

What is Art Deco?

Art Deco is an art and interior style that reached its peak in the 1920s and 1930s. The style emerged in an era of optimism and international luxury, and you can see that in every object. It is sleek, dynamic and refined all at once.

Where Art Nouveau is graceful and organic, this style chooses structure. Straight lines, geometric forms, stylised figures and rich materials such as bronze, marble and glass. The style radiates confidence. It is decorative, but never noncommittal.

A well-chosen Art Deco piece never feels dated. It brings weight and personality to a space, in a modern interior just as much as in a classic home with history.

How do you recognise Art Deco?

You recognise the style by three things at once: the form, the material and the attitude of the object. An Art Deco piece doesn’t ask for attention. It commands it immediately.

Clean lines and geometry

Straight lines, symmetry, fan shapes and stepped silhouettes are typical. Even when the subject is graceful, a dancer or a panther, the form stays clear and self-contained.

Movement as composition

Many sculptures show movement or draw on sport: a figure poised in tension, an animal about to spring. That movement is never accidental. Rhythm and balance are cast into the bronze entirely on purpose.

Rich materials

Bronze, marble, glass and patinated metal give Art Deco its weight. They also make it durable. A good piece is meant to be looked at and lived with.

Art Deco or Art Nouveau: what’s the difference?

Art Nouveau grows. Art Deco builds.

Art Nouveau draws its inspiration from nature: flowers, tendrils, organic lines and graceful, flowing forms. Art Deco is sleeker and more modern: geometry, symmetry, powerful silhouettes and luxurious materials. Where the Art Nouveau woman is graceful, with long hair and flowing robes, her Art Deco counterpart is the sporty, emancipated flapper with a short bob. A different era, a different silhouette.

Both styles have great charm, but they speak a different language. Art Nouveau is dreamy. Art Deco is urban and worldly.

At Deconamic you’ll find the best of both worlds. That way you can compare which style best suits your interior and taste – without having to choose right away.

Art Deco sculptures, lamps and objects

Every object is more than decoration. It’s a choice for atmosphere, craftsmanship and a form that keeps fascinating.

Art Deco sculptures

Bronze Art Deco sculptures are among the most beloved objects within this style. A panther, a dancer, a bust or a mythological figure gains an almost permanent presence in a room through its design.

Such a sculpture doesn’t have to be large. On a pedestal, sideboard, mantelpiece or desk, a single well-chosen piece can carry an entire room.

Art Deco lamps

Art Deco lamps bring function and art together. They give light, but they are sculpture at the same time. The base, the glass, the pose of the figure and the balance between form and light make the lamp a fully fledged object in its own right.

It sits beautifully in a reading nook, hallway, sitting room or bedroom. It sets a mood without ever being loud.

Art Deco bookends

Art Deco bookends are practical and sculptural at once. They give character to a library, desk or cabinet – a particularly refined choice for anyone who loves books, art and interiors.

Vases and decorative objects

Ceramics, vases and smaller decorative pieces play an important role too. They bring colour, form and rhythm into a space. Sometimes understated, sometimes outspoken, but good pieces always stay balanced.

Buying Art Deco at Deconamic

What can we tell you about Deconamic? For almost forty years, Deconamic has specialised in Art Deco and Art Nouveau objects. We are also the exclusive Benelux distributor of Max Le Verrier, the French foundry that has been producing iconic sculptures and lamps for over a century.

With us you’ll find both original models from the Art Deco period and the contemporary versions, cast in the workshop of the artist’s great-grandson. Every purchase comes with a certificate of authenticity, your guarantee that you hold an officially and expertly made object, and not some random imitation of unknown origin.

We don’t choose objects because they happen to be old. We choose pieces because the form is right, the material speaks and they add something to an interior that newly made décor can rarely give: exclusivity, history and personality.

Two frequently asked questions

Does Deconamic ship outside Belgium?

Yes. Deconamic ships worldwide via DHL. Every piece is carefully packed so it arrives safely, wherever you live. Get in touch for more information about shipping costs and delivery times.

How do I care for a bronze or metal sculpture?

Bronze needs little maintenance. Dust it regularly with a soft, dry cloth and avoid aggressive cleaning products. Direct, prolonged sunlight can affect the patina.
