Who was Max Le Verrier?

Max Le Verrier (1891–1973) was a French artist born in Neuilly-sur-Seine. His mother was Belgian, his father a Parisian goldsmith. After World War I, he studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Geneva.

There, he met fellow artists like Pierre Le Faguays and Marcel Bouraine, forming lifelong friendships. In 1919, he opened his own foundry in Paris and began producing sculptures, lamps, bookends, and even car mascots.

What defines his style?

Le Verrier was a key figure in decorative arts between the wars. His style is classic Art Deco: elegant, geometric, powerful.

He sculpted mainly female figures and animals, graceful and full of movement. Think of a woman holding a glass globe (Clarté), a walking panther (Baghera) or a pair of bookends (Délassement).

His first work? A pelican in typical Art Deco style, signed under his pseudonym Artus.

What animal sculptures did he make?

Max Le Verrier had a love for animals and often visited zoos and circuses to study them. His collection includes:

  • Panther sculptures such as Baghera, Jungle and Ouganda
  • A striking lion
  • Elegant storks, squirrels and horses
  • The Pluie lamp, depicting a chimpanzee named Boubou, who posed in exchange for bananas

These sculptures combine realism with stylised Art Deco lines and are cherished by collectors and art lovers alike.

What makes the Clarté lamp so special?

The Clarté lamp is Max Le Verrier’s most iconic piece. It shows a woman on her toes, arms extended holding a glass globe – a symbol of light and clarity.

Three different models posed for the head, torso and legs. The lower body was inspired by a dancer from the Josephine Baker ballet.

The lamp comes in four sizes:
